“Human Interest Story” Amina

Amina is a mother of eight who has faced several challenges, including a husband who subjected her to regular physical assault. She only saw her home as a battleground where she and her children suffered at the hands of her husband and from economic difficulties.

Amina’s life took a positive turn when a case worker she met at the CARE safe space supported her and provided Amina with one-time cash assistance, counselling and dignity kits. With this, Amina started a small business of making and selling groundnut cakes to support herself and her family.

The intervention has brought tremendous transformation in Amina’s circumstances. With her income, she is able to contribute to her household’s budget, and with information on the negative practice of gender-based violence (GBV) issues and how to seek help, Amina’s story has become an inspiration to other women. With community awareness of GBV and its consequences, there has been a collective transformation in the community regarding negative social norms like GBV. Several people in the community, especially men, now condemn GBV and other negative practices against women.

Amina’s journey from a victim of abuse to a survivor and entrepreneur is a testament to the success of GBV interventions.
