Getting to Gender Equal
CARE works around the globe to save lives, defeat poverty, and achieve social justice.

We have developed a strong reputation for our gender expertise in Nigeria, particularly for promoting women’s leadership and preventing and responding to SGBV. We have also gained experience in providing adolescent-friendly SRHR services. Our new strategy aims to broaden and deepen our work impacting women and adolescent populations. This will require us to adopt and adapt methodologies that address gender barriers and discrimination simultaneously in our projects. In the new strategy cycle, we will establish a gender transformative strengthening plan that will include, but not be limited to, the following initiatives:
- Systematize the use of effective program approaches/methodologies that help to overcome gender barriers, such as couples and SAA dialogues, VSLA, Engaging Boys and Men or adaptations of the Community Scorecard, and using male champions as agents of change.
- Improve integrated gender analysis at the country and project level and disseminate and discuss results with staff and partners.
- Mobilize resources for longitudinal learning and robust documentation and dissemination of lessons learned from projects tackling gender discrimination.
- Continue to improve the application of the gender marker and use PIIRS data to monitor progress and determine corrective action if we fail to meet targets.
- Increase gender equality and inclusion within CARE Nigeria at all levels, with the help of affirmative action in recruitment, and the provision of coaching and mentoring programs for female staff.
- Monitor progress of our strengthening plan and the implementation of gender quality standards in regular program and senior leadership team meetings.
